Every year, the healthcare sector produces 328,000,000 kilos of waste — the equivalent of 30,000 garbage trucks. For many healthcare professionals, the pollution and consumption in the sector feel contradictory: healthcare is meant to make people better, yet at the same time, it contributes to climate change and environmental pollution, which harm public health.
A growing number of healthcare institutions are changing course. A key intervention in this shift is ‘Reduce’: minimizing product usage and waste. This can mean using less of the same product, choosing a smaller version, or eliminating an unnecessary routine procedure altogether.
Reducing is highly dependent on behavior. And behavior, in turn, is strongly influenced by factors such as workplace design, the attitude of a supervisor, or the knowledge of healthcare professionals. So how do we effectively intervene in those areas? Can reduction be learned?
At this Medical Delta Café, we’ll explore these questions together. Successful real-world examples and scientific insights will be shared, and key statements will be discussed.
Short presentations will alternate with discussions and the event will conclude with a networking reception.
This Café is a joint initiative by the LDE Center for Sustainability and Medical Delta.
