Wednesday, April 26, 2023

Medical Delta professor Andrew Webb is one of the eighteen new members of the KNAW. The approximately 600 members of the KNAW are prominent scientists from all disciplines. Membership is for life. The new Academy members will be installed on Monday, October 30th.

Professor Andrew Webb is a radiology professor at Leiden University and the founding director of the Gorter MRI Centre at LUMC. He was appointed as a Medical Delta professor in 2021. Webb is also a consortium member of the scientific program Medical Delta Diagnostics 3.0: Dementia and Stroke.

Webb is an expert in MRI, a medical research technique that uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to look inside the body. He has developed techniques to improve image quality and maximize information content. His specific research area is to broaden the impact of this technology by developing simpler, more sustainable, and smarter MRI machines that are also accessible in developing countries or can be used in small healthcare facilities. With an open science approach, he is developing entirely new MRI machines that use powerful small permanent magnets instead of traditional superconducting magnets. The first version of this MRI machine was built on-site in Uganda, with plans for many more in other low- and middle-income countries.
