Erasmus MC researcher Kirby Lattwein has been awarded one of the Dekker Grants from the Heart Foundation. The grant provides young cardiovascular scientists with the opportunity to further develop themselves and establish and expand their research lines. Lattwein previously received funding from the Medical Delta Talent Acceleration Call.
Biomedical technologist and researcher Dr. Kirby Lattwein aims to develop a gel containing super-small gas bubbles and medication that can be directed to the site of heart inflammation caused by bacteria using ultrasound for targeted treatment.
Bacteria in the bloodstream can reach the heart or heart valves and cause inflammation. For individuals with pre-existing heart problems, such an infection can be life-threatening. Prolonged antibiotic treatments may not effectively resolve such an infection. These medications cannot effectively kill the bacteria, especially if there is a protective layer around them. Bacteria with such a protective layer are also difficult to surgically remove. Infections can therefore recur even after treatment.
Lattwein intends to activate the tiny gas bubbles and medication using ultrasound by causing them to vibrate. The vibrating gas bubbles can penetrate the protective layer of the bacteria and directly kill them. In the coming years, she will also investigate the effectiveness of this gel. The goal is for surgeons to eventually apply this gel during heart surgeries to eliminate bacteria and prevent infections or new infections.
