Medical Delta professor Prof. Gerjo van Osch (Erasmus MC, TU Delft) will receive an ‘Engineering and Physical Sciences’ Suffrage Science award award today on International Women's Day. Professor Sue Kimber from the University of Manchester passes this prestigious award on to her.
Every two years, twelve Engineering and Physical Sciences Suffrage Science awards are transferred from scientist to scientist. The Suffrage Science awards were created to honor women's scientific achievements and are presented by the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences. In two years’ time, Van Osch can decide who will succeed her. Until then, she may wear an award-winning jewel (a pendant or a brooch) which she then passes on, to create a ‘chain’ of female scientists.
Professor Sue Kimber praises her successor for her scientific relations and her research on cellular mechanisms of chondrogenesis, her research on the use of stem cells and biomaterials in tissue engineering for cartilage repair and her research into the influence of the inflamed environment in cartilage repair.
“Gerjo is an excellent scientist and a point of contact within the research field for well-thought-out advice. She is an inspiring and excellent role model for young researchers - especially women - in the field of tissue engineering. She has published more than two hundred articles and is coordinating a Horizon2020 MSCA-ITN.”
In addition to Medical Delta professor, Van Osch is Scientific Leader of the Medical Delta Regenerative Medicine 4D scientific program. She is currently chair of the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS) -EU and has been on the board of several (inter)national research associations and scientific journals.
