An interdisciplinary research team including Prof. Dr. Eline Slagboom (LUMC) has received a grant from the ZonMW Open Competition for research into genes and behavior as the biological basis for a long and healthy life. Slagboom is one of the Scientific Leaders of the scientific program METABODELTA: Metabolomics for clinical advances in the Medical Delta, to which the research contributes.
Although life expectancy is increasing worldwide, the gain in healthy life years lags behind. Longevity families traced in Dutch databases often age free of disease into old age. In the awarded project, Slagboom and her co-researchers will explore the relationship between social, behaviour-related and genetic mechanisms that provide protection against chronic age-related diseases and stimulate healthy ageing.
The ZonMw Open Competition is specifically intended for innovative and groundbreaking combinations of two or more research groups. Sixteen research teams will set up innovative collaborations that contribute to innovation in science and healthcare for the longer term. They will each receive a maximum of €750,000 from the ZonMw Open Competition programme.
