The company XS Innovations has raised an investment of €1.1 million to further develop a medical instrument for dialysis for kidney patients. XS Innovations is a spin-off of LUMC and TU Delft. Various Medical Delta researchers are involved in the development of the innovative device.
Patients with kidney failure who are treated with dialysis experience many complications related to their vascular access. A good vascular access is necessary to purify the patient's blood using the dialysis machine. A significant cause of these complications is the continuously high blood flow in the connection between an artery and a vein, which is the type of vascular access currently most commonly used. The very high and turbulent blood flow that occurs in this connection results in narrowing of the blood vessels and additional strain on the heart.
The so-called ‘Dynamic AVF’ from XS Innovations is a device that is used to connect these blood vessels only during the dialysis treatment—usually three times a week for four hours. Before and after this treatment, the connection remains closed, allowing for normal blood circulation, which is expected to reduce the risk of complications.
The investment comes from a consortium consisting of FIRST Fund, Medtech TTT, UNIIQ, Delft Enterprises, Libertatis Ergo Holding, and the Graduate Entrepreneur Fund.
