Marije Holstege, new special lecturer Geriatric rehabilitation at Inholland

Friday, September 30, 2022

Dr. Marije Holstege has been associate professor of Geriatric Rehabilitation at Inholland University of Applied Sciences since September 2022. The professorship was established by care organization Omring and is part of the existing professorship Health and Wellness of Vulnerable Elderly People. Holstege is one of the living lab leaders of Medical Delta Living Lab Geriatric Rehabilitation@Home.

With the growing number of elderly people and staff shortages, the pressure on care is increasing. Also for vulnerable, often elderly patients rehabilitating after hospitalization. How can they rehabilitate as optimally and sustainably as possible using innovative interventions? Holstege is going to focus on this issue.

"This professorship is going to offer a lot of new opportunities for the further development of sustainable and innovative geriatric rehabilitation," says Holstege.

The group of elderly people with complex care needs in the Netherlands is increasing. In 2019 we still had 3.4 million people over the age of 65, in 2040 there will be 4.9 million. This growing group of elderly people will need care sooner or later, and that is where the next bottleneck is, because by 2040 the potential working per person over 65 will halve. Clearly, plans are needed to optimize care with innovative interventions so that quality and accessibility are not compromised.
