Momo BedSense has been declared the winner of the Zuid-Holland regional preliminary round for the Care Innovation Award 2023. The announcement took place on February 16th at the Province of Zuid-Holland's ‘Festival Gezond Verstand’. As in previous years, Medical Delta organized of the regional preliminary round.
Three entries in the Zuid-Holland region pitched their innovation after which a jury chose the winner of the South Holland regional preliminary round. Momo BedSense received the Care Innovation Award of Zuid-Holland from Meindert Stolk, deputy of the Province of Zuid-Holland and David de Glint, director of Medical Delta, and is now competing for the National Care Innovation Award 2023.
The Momo BedSense App gives healthcare professionals insight and overview of nursing home residents. The app is linked to a bed sensor. Caregivers can thus see at a glance which residents need attention. This creates more person-centered care where caregivers save time, especially during night and morning care. At the same time, it increases the safety of residents, thanks to fewer falls, among other things.
"We are pleasantly surprised with the results. We had hoped for great results, but did not immediately expect it because the other nominees also had a strong story," said Jorien de Jonge and Menno Gravemaker of Momo Medical in an initial reaction. "This win helps us to make our innovation better known and ultimately help more healthcare professionals."
The jury panel was formed by Medical Delta professor Prof. Dr. Andrea Evers, Denise Fortuin of InnovationQuarter and Samantha di Rocco of healthcare organization Careyn. The three pitches were judged on the criteria of the National Care Innovation Award: feasibility, scalability, future-proofing and added value. In particular, scalability and added value were the deciding factors in choosing Momo BedSense, with the jury also praising Momo BedSense's focus on implementation. "This innovation offers a solution to the urgent problem of increasing workload for healthcare workers. It reduces their workload and absenteeism and offers benefits for nursing home residents, such as reducing the risk of falls," said jury member Andrea Evers.
The judges also praised the other nominated innovations Rollz Motion Rhythm and Hospital Hero's app. The Rollz Motion Rhythm is a rollator intended for people with neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease. Different stimuli ensure that the walking rhythm can be maintained. The stable rollator prevents falls in case of instability, while "cues" eliminate the so-called freezing effect, for example by projecting step length and step rhythm on the ground with a laser line.
Hospital Hero's app guides children through their visits to the hospital. The app introduces children to the hospital at home and provides distraction in the hospital. The goal of the app is to reduce children's stress and anxiety before a hospital visit, making a hospital visit more enjoyable, better and efficient. Children already start playing with the app at home. Thus, the app prepares child and parent for the hospital visit.
For the National Care Innovation Award, Health~Holland annually searches for the best healthcare innovation in the Netherlands. Innovations that improve the quality and efficiency of care and are successfully tested and implemented with end users have a chance to win a prize and professional guidance in the further development of their innovation.
Innovative companies in the scale-up phase have a chance to win the professional jury prize (€10,000) and the public prize (€5,000). As in previous years, Medical Delta held the preliminary round for the Zuid-Holland region. Previous winners of the regional round included 1Minute (2022), Cue2Walk (2021), Cloud (2020), which also won the national audience prize in 2020, Biocheck (2019) and CloudCuddle (2018).
