Third edition of Festival Gezond Verstand revolves around connecting and taking action

Building health together — with common sense. That was the focus of the third edition of Festival Gezond Verstand. Hundreds of participants found inspiration to help initiatives grow. A lot is already happening in Zuid-Holland, and by improving connections, we can increase our collective impact.

From government and knowledge institutions to entrepreneurs, healthcare, community initiatives, growers, and farmers: the diversity in the room was significant. When moderator and Health & Wellbeing program manager Irene Voskamp-ter Borg asks who comes from which sector, she sees hands going up everywhere. “A beautifully diverse group to seek connection with,” she says at the start. That connection is essential for working toward a healthy food system, a healthy living environment, and resilient, vital residents.

“Zuid-Holland is one of the unhealthiest provinces,” says Deputy for Health & Wellbeing Mariëtte van Leeuwen. “Half of adults are overweight. Lifestyle-related diseases lead to high healthcare costs and absenteeism, and there are also large health disparities between population groups and regions. As a province, we want to help residents improve their health and reduce these health differences. Food is the best and most affordable medicine to prevent lifestyle-related diseases.”

It’s about taking action

Anne Koning, Deputy for Housing, emphasizes the importance of a healthy living environment: “When we talk about housing, it often focuses mainly on numbers. But it is equally important that we build healthily. With public spaces where people can play and meet each other, and with good facilities. And the great thing is: with the Healthy Design approach, these two aspects go hand in hand.”

The Delta Action Agenda, launched at the festival, addresses these themes, as well as “Healthy and Resilient Residents.” Medical Delta prepared the agenda on behalf of the province. Chair Prof. Dr. Sanne de Vries says: “We gathered input from many parties to combine knowledge and strengths. This way, we can further develop and scale up what already exists. It is an action agenda, so it’s about taking action.” To scale up working solutions, the province is making a new subsidy available through the Healthy Society program.

Doing the right thing

Rob Baan, owner of Koppert Cress nursery, emphasizes that action is important, without “unnecessary barriers.” He refers to the 80% tax rate he has to pay on free healthy lunches for his employees. Now that a cost-benefit analysis shows that this benefits both companies and society, his message to politicians in The Hague is clear: “We are proving beyond doubt that this works. Now let us do the right thing.”

In the room, these barriers were recognized. Several participants immediately formed new connections to strengthen each other. During the workshops, they worked on a variety of themes: from Gezond Ontwerpen to Placetesting and the Gezonde Basisschool van de Toekomst. At the Gezonde Markt, visitors were introduced to numerous initiatives, ranging from the Brei-Oma’s to Positief Ontwerpen op de Tekentafel. Gospel choir G-Roots provided a musical finale – because, as Marijke Will-Jansen, Senior Innovation Manager at Medical Delta, concluded: “There’s music in this!”
