The "steerable punch" is a minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery instrument that allows a surgeon to remove a torn meniscus in one continuous cutting session.
Societal: In minimally invasive surgery, a surgeon operates through small incisions. This results in smaller scars, less trauma, faster recovery, and a lower risk of infection for patients, among other things.
Economic: Minimally invasive surgery requires far fewer instruments per procedure, which reduces costs. The "semi-detachable" version of the Steerable punch from the company Surge-on has been further developed into a CE-certified instrument and is thus ready to enter the European market.
Scientific: Several clinical studies are currently underway in the Netherlands, South Korea, and Portugal.
Surge-on Medical, in collaboration with the Living Lab Medical Delta Instruments, developed the 'Semi detachable' version of the steerable punch into an initial 0-series production. Within the project, a proof-of-principle of the semi-detachable version was developed into a prototype that could be tested in the clinic and patients. Due to the good results, the semi-detachable version will replace the fully detachable version, as it is much easier to sterilize.
