Master students from various fields of study in Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam can now register for the second year of the Interdisciplinary Thesis Lab 'Sustainable Hospitals' of Medical Delta and the LDE Centre for Sustainability that will start in February.
Healthcare accounts for 7% of the total Dutch carbon footprint, including emissions from energy consumption, medicines and travel movements. Hospitals also produce a lot of waste, 20-30% of which comes from operating rooms. Pollution increases with the deployment of new technologies and materials.
Therefore, Medical Delta and the LDE Center for Sustainability launched last year’s Interdisciplinary Thesis Lab 'Sustainable Hospitals' for master's students that revolves around the question: how do we achieve a sustainable hospital? The thesis lab 'Sustainable Hospitals' is one of the four thesis labs of LDE Centre for Sustainability.
The first year of the thesis lab yielded important new insights. This year, too, the focus is on making hospitals more sustainable and students are tasked with arriving at new insights and concrete solutions for greening hospitals in their thesis research. "How we get to truly sustainable hospitals is a big question and an appropriate answer is not there yet. The thesis lab should contribute to finding solutions," said Prof. Dr. Frank Willem Jansen, president of Medical Delta. "The beauty of the thesis lab is that it also helps master's students themselves in their personal development from expert in a particular research field, to professional with knowledge of different discplines and practice."
